Krista Sigurdson

Krista Sigurdson (she/her) is a public education advocate and a sociologist who teaches at UBC. She has served as chair of the Strathcona Elementary PAC and as executive of Vancouver DPAC. She is a parent of 2 children in the K-12 system and a regular correspondent on CBC’s parent panel. 

Her advocacy has focussed on issues facing The Downtown Eastside school her children attend. Food security, equity, climate justice, engagement with local host First Nations and transparent decision making are key to her framework. Through DPAC, Krista has shown leadership on issues like Covid Response strategies and support for teachers and families. She has been honored to support Jennifer Reddy through the OneCity education caucus.

Who is your favourite musician?

My husband, Colin Brumelle. You may know him from the 90s funk sensation, Greenroom. Now he can be found playing soul, funk, pop and jazz with friends at Templeton park.

Which is your favourite Vancouver restaurant?

Impossible question! Ask for Luigi is great.

Where is your favourite spot in Vancouver that hardly anyone else knows about?

Bike route from the DTES to Coal Harbour...before you are forced through Canada Place parking lot!

Who is your political hero or role model?

My sister, Elin Sigurdson, because she is brilliant, inspiring and so much fun. You know her from the 2018 OneCity hit song "We're Here for a Good Time & A Long Time"!

It's the end of your first term (on Council, SB, PB). What three achievements are you most proud of?

1) Increasing transparency and public participation at the VSB;
2) Centering the needs of Indigenous learners and other marginalized students
3) Making school board politics fun. This is supposed to be fun, right?
